The distance traveled from Cape Town to Hogsback return, is well over 2000km, so after much discussion it has been decided to rather fly into Port Elizabeth where we will collect our coach and then travel by road to Hogsback, a more acceptable 260kM.
Spring, of course, is ‘the’ time when Hogsback puts on its prettiest clothes and it will astound you with flowers and beauty. Lilies grow everywhere and all their gardens are a paradise of colours. The annual Spring Festival runs from 23rd September to 14th October so our timing is perfect!
Day 1: Saturday 30th September
Following our mid morning flight, our arrival in Hogsback will be mid afternoon. Settle into your home for the next 5 nights – The Arminel Hotel situated in central Hogsback. It is nestled in the natural setting of the famous Hogsback mountains, with a tarred road leading up to the entrance and surrounded by some of the Eastern Cape’s most beautiful indigenous forests, inspiring waterfalls and colourful gardens. Settle in and enjoy dinner at the hotel. Our group is booked in on a Dinner, Bed and Breakfast basis. (We may decide to visit other local restaurants in place of ‘all dinners in house’).
Day 2: Sunday 1st October
After breakfast we will go down to the Visitors Info centre, where, at 09h30 we will be taken on a guided tour of two beautiful Spring Gardens, where you can see Camellias & Rhododendrons; enjoy and be inspired! There will be a lunch stop in one of the local restaurants.
Hogsback has its own Arts and Crafts Trail – our afternoons will be spent exploring some of the places along this trail.
Day 3: Monday 2nd October
We head out of town to The Edge Hotel a distance of only 2km. Here you can walk their labyrinth. This is an eleven-circuit Labyrinth, similar in design to the one at the Chartres Cathedral in France. It has a diameter of 29 metres and a circumference of 91 metres. The length of the pathway is 700 metres and the total distance of the walk to the centre is 1.4kM, making it one of the largest Labyrinths in the world, It was completed in 2002. After this walk you will need something to drink and possibly a light lunch.
This afternoon we head to the Arboretum – this is a garden of trees from all over the world, and includes several Californian Redwood trees, now well over 100 years old. The trees have markers showing their botanical common names.
Day 4: Tuesday 3rd October
This morning we will visit a nursery in Hogsback and enjoy a guided tour of their amazing garden. The Applegarth Gardens and Nursery exemplifies the beauty and serenity of Hogsback. The Gardens are approximately 4 ha in extent, and the owners justifiably take great pride in them. The afternoon will be spent doing some retail therapy along the Hogsback Arts and Crafts trail
We came across the flowing comment on Applegarth’s Facebook page:
‘What a privilege it has been these last few days, walking people from all ages and all walks of life through our gardens. Granted the gardens are in their absolute full glory , boasting colour and radiance, but each and every person that walked through them , brought their own sense of radiance. One lady quoted ” I wish you could see your gardens through my eyes!!! “THANK YOU, I took a moment, breathed in and “actually ” looked around and opened my eyes and my senses !’
Day 5: Wednesday 4th October
Today being our last day in Hogsback you will be feeling relaxed and ready to tackle one (or two) of the easy walks. OR perhaps you feel like chilling and absorbing the views of Hogsback. Perhaps we need to go in pursuit of buying a Pig made of Clay (apparently at the local filling station hawkers sell these unique souvenirs!) We can also arrange for you to do a bird tour in the forest – there is a local experienced person who does these tours, or to visit the Eco Shrine.
Day 6: Thursday 5th October
After breakfast we head back to Port Elizabeth for our flight to Cape Town! We say ‘Au revoir’ to Hogsback and take the memories back home with us, filled with the love of nature and everything beautiful. On arrival in Cape Town the shuttles will be waiting to transport you to your home.
Whilst this tour starts and ends in Cape Town, we are able to provide a quotation for you to join our tour from wherever you may be resident.
