Thirty of us headed out to the Stellenbosch area on the 27th October. The weather is improving in Cape Town, and all were excited at the prospect of being out-and-about for the day.
First stop was Polkadraai Farm Stall and a worthy stop for all. Strawberries are of exceptional quality and were on special – R30 for a fabulous punnet! They supply Woolworths / Spar and Pick ‘n Pay with their top-quality fruit. It was exciting and heart-warming to see several schools who make it a part of their day to bring the children to pick strawberries in the fields. Especially near to our hearts were a group of partially sighted children and the joy & pride they showed with their bucket to take home to their parents!
Next stop, after a lovely drive past Vredenheim and their healthy animals on either side of the road, was Vergenoegd. Everyone settled down and enjoyed catching up with friends. To coin Molly and Juno’s phrase who elected to sit-alone after not seeing each other for many months – “Life is good”
At 12h30 everyone is summonsed and the duck parade starts.
Perhaps a little disappointing for Brian and I who had seen the parade a few months previously! There are definitely fewer ducks – explained to me later that they have been ‘selling off many of the older ducks’ – Come on Vergenoegd make sure people come back time-and-time again by keeping the numbers on the parade worthwhile!
We had elected to have Vineyard platters for lunch and a remark was made at our table how, eventually when the platters arrived at 13h15, just how terribly quiet everyone became.
Probably by now this was that everyone was extremely hungry. The charcuterie/cheese platters were followed by dessert platters with a fabulous selection from chocolate brownies to carrot cake to cheesecake type individual desserts had everyone quite happy!
We left Vergenoegd at just after 15h00 and headed back to the city, happy to say we’d all had a wonderful day, with such happy people.
