April always signals the end of ‘summer’ and the start of winter. Today was planned around enjoying the ‘last rays of summer’ and how correct I was! The day dawned crystal clear – no clouds or wind – and on arrival in Yzerfontein I heard sighs of contentment at the beautiful sight of the beach! Here was this beach all ready for us to take a stroll with friends catching up. Some just stood and spoke – some ventured along the brick paved path – some chatted to the friendly lady in the beach front art gallery – some took their walk very seriously (Maureen and Thyra) who say they are in training for the Big Daddy dune in Sossusvlei!!
A short drive through the town to admire the wonderful homes and then our arrival at the local shopping centre where Die Rooi Granaat ; Blikaspaai and several other shops trade.
We received a warm welcome from Marais, partner at the Rooi Granaat, who came to the coach to say ‘hello’.
Melani of Blikaspaai, the local Décor/Gift store right next door to the Rooi Granaat was so very warm in her welcome as well. A table laid out with Sherries/ Cheese/ Olives / Biltong to nibble on whilst we browsed her store. She has such a wonderful eye and her shop is a paradise for women to ‘gather’!
Very soon we were summonsed by Evert, the chef at Rooi Granaat to come to table as his food was ready!
Die Rooi Granaat lived up to my expectation completely! I had read glowing reports on Trip Adviser and wow we were blown away! The French Casserole prepared with Fillet of Beef and fresh vegetables all served piping hot followed by a choice of a baked pear tart or chocolate orange dessert had everyone very satisfied! Marais was the perfect host and made sure that the ladies had sufficient wine and even satisfying many of them by going out into his garden and bringing cuttings of succulents for the ladies to take home.
What a treat to have the entire staff of Die Rooi Granaat out on the grass to wave good-bye to us – what hospitality the West Coast folk display!! This made for a wonderful end to our day out in Yzerfontein!
Die Rooi Granaat is indeed worthy of their title on Trip Adviser: “The Best Restaurant on the West Coast”
