Dates Available: 31st March 2019 – Tuesday 2nd April 2019
This rail-tour operated by Ceres Rail Company is based on similar trips operated by Ceres Rail to Bredasdorp but caters primarily for railway enthusiasts visiting the Stars of Sandstone event occurring a week later. The itinerary is set out on a 3-day schedule starting in Cape Town on Sunday 31st March 2019 and ending in Cape Town on Tuesday 2nd April.
Overnight accommodation is provided at a Caledon hotel on the evenings of the 31st March 2019 and 1st April with breakfast and supper included. Lunches are provided either at a stop or on the train.
A number of quality photo-runpasts arranged by experienced railway photographers are planned for on the journey.
The Ceres Rail train consists mainly of 1948 built coaches that have been refurbished, and in some cases modernised with comfortable contemporary furnishings, and includes a lounge/bar car, a pillared dining car (Selati built 1927) and an observation car at the rear. The rest of the train is made up of compartment coaches, which allow passengers some privacy if they require. The Ceres Rail coach livery is not SAR red & grey, but a medium red, not unlike the old livery of New Zealand Railways.
The locomotive will be an oil burning Class 19D 4-8-2, either Nos. 3321 or 3322 (North British 1948). Ceres Rail reserves the right to substitute other classes or Transnet (national rail operator) traction if circumstances require.
