We will head up the N7 going past rolling green fields – the rain has been fantastic over winter in the Western Cape! There might even be fields of yellow canola to admire!
Darling Cellars will be our first stop. They have an excellent range of wines and even a small coffee shop – time for a 30-minute stop here!
Duckitt Orchids is synonymous with beauty and the GOOD NEWS is that they have become user-friendly! They now allow tours of their hot houses and you will be booked on a personal tour – (Early September is the time the orchids are at their very best – but the lady who does the tours says there is always something flowering, in fact, they do tours up until the end of November) – They even have an Orchid Shop where you can be enticed to take a bloom home or stock up on fertiliser for the one’s you have at home!
Darling Sweets– another icon in Darling, is next Their toffees and newly introduced soft caramels will have you stocking up to take home! Their range of flavours have unusual names – Ginger and Cardamon; Mocha Java; Salted liquorice; Summer Berry – each with their unique taste. In the toffee range you can choose from Rooibos Chai; Tannie Evita’s classic toffee; Ginger Snap toffees.
Ormonde Private Cellar will be waiting to seat us in their BIG BARREL BARN to enjoy lunch. We have arranged for them to serve their famous artisan platters,– isolated from the public and all on our own – so social distancing is taken care of!
Their quality platters will have you going back to Darling for more!! The content is provided by local suppliers and it is exciting to see the quality of what is supplied.
The contents of the Ormonde platters vary and is based on the availability and seasonality of
produce. Following is an sample of what you can expect: a loaf of Freshly baked Artisan bread, selection of award winning boutique cheeses, Merlot poached pear, country pâté with port wine jelly, herb salad, onion marmalade, olives, smoked cold cuts and a hand full of nuts – usually there is something sweet to end your lunch experience as well.
Cost of transport, Orchid tour & lunch, is R480.
