Saturday 5th May:
Our journey to Graaff Reinet, home of Mount Camdeboo Private Game Reserve, covers a distance of 711 kM and because of this we will be breaking our trip in Oudtshoorn (402kM). Our home for tonight will be at the 4 star La Plume Boutique Geust House, a working Ostrich, alfalfa and cattle farm, situated 7km outside Oudtshoorn.
We continue via Willowmore (Tea and cake at Sophie’s in Willowmore) – Since we enjoy a high tea at Mount Camdeboo we will not have lunch en route today. Mount Camdeboo Private Game Reserve lies just to the east of Graaff-Reinet in the heart of the malaria free Eastern Cape’s Great Karoo and is luxurious beyond expectation.
Experience a personalised safari in a region that is steeped in history and culture.
Guests are accommodated in Cape Dutch houses that lie cupped in the palm of the Sneeuberg Mountain range. Once homes to generations of settlers, these magnificent homesteads have been sensitively converted into havens of five star luxury.
Accommodation has been reserved in Camdeboo Manor and Courtyard Manor. Mount Camdeboo provides wholesome traditional meals, a team of friendly and professional hosts and superior hospitality in a relaxed homely environment. 14 000 hectares of ancient land is home to cheetah, white rhino, cape buffalo, giraffe, mountain zebra, wild cats, sable, a host of antelope, birds of prey and a unique collection of fauna and flora.
Our booking includes all meals, local beverages, house wines & ales plus 2 daily game drives.
We will spend three nights here, one of which will see us having dinner in their boma.
Monday 7th & Tuesday 8th:
We are able to make use of some of the facilities at Mount Camdeboo namely: Game Drives / Guided bush walks / Cheetah tracking (at the sole discretion of the ranger) / Star gazing. (The Great Karoo has some of the clearest skies in the southern hemisphere, which offer up glittering treasures of the sky). / Mount Camdeboo Small Cat Project / Project Walk – an easy 2hr morning walk along the valley to take in the various Mount Camdeboo Breeding Projects. / Historic Anglo Boer War site where the pivotal “Battle of Paardefontein” was fought. It is here that the famous Boer Commander Johannes Lötter was finally captured. (The story is related on one of the game drives; further reading material is available in the curio shop). Some facilities are optional (at a cost) and need to be booked beforehand.
We will also take in some local attractions in Graaff Reinet such as the magnificent Dutch Reformed church, Reinet House (Museum), and the breathtaking Valley of Desolation as well as the Owl House at Nieu Bethesda (extra trip for Tuesday 9th!)
Today we take our leave of this beautiful area and return to Cape Town via Oudtshoorn (320kM), where we will overnight again at La Plume Boutique Hotel.
The final leg of our journey (402kM) will take us along the N2 to Cape Town where we should arrive by mid afternoon.
