TimeOut - Future Outings

Thursday 25th March 2010

Gabriëlskloof
Botrivier Valley

We head out on the N2, with our first stop being in the Kogel Valley on the road to Hermanus
I have discovered Barton Farm which was has Tuscan villas with views of mountains, olive groves, vineyards and lavender fields.
These houses are beautifully appointed with modern décor, fireplaces, large open-plan living areas, private pools and gardens visited by Guinea fowl, Blue Cranes and Peacocks.
The farm produces its own wines, olive oil and face creams from their French lavender bushes.
We will enjoy a guided tour of this exclusive accommodation.

There will be an optional wine tasting (R15 per person). After our morning visit we head back on the N2 to just outside Bot River where we will find Gabrielskloof
Gabrielskloof is a new winery situated between Botriver and Caledon a mere 500m off the N2 highway, offering the visitor a spectacular cellar experience with their first release wines, restaurant and deli with 360 degree Overberg views. There is also a chapel on site. They also offer home grown olive oils, and wholesome local country fare.
Brian & I stopped in for breakfast on 2nd January and were pleasantly surprised at the service and quality of the offering.

This restaurant, owned by two chefs, Juan vd Westhuizen and Frans Groenewald, provides menus based on the fresh seasonal produce of the Overberg.  They add their own style to create varied and interesting dishes, offering something special for everyone.

I learnt something new when I was told they usually give everyone a small ‘amuse bouche’.  Back to “Google I went – ‘Amuse Bouche’ is a little flavourful bite to amuse your palate, a French term pronounced ‘uh-MYUZ-boosh’.  These two chefs have set up a wonderful lunch which I know you will all enjoy!
